Hussey back with CSK as batting coach

Michael Hussey has been appointed as the batting coach for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the 11th edition of the Indian Premier League. The former Australia left-hander is no stranger to CSK, having played for the side in seven out of the first eight seasons and was part of the titlewinning squad on both the occasions. “I am really excited about returning to CSK in a coaching capacity and working with the players and help them get the best out of themselves and also help to bring success to this great franchise,” Hussey said.

Fondly referred to as ‘Mr Cricket’, Hussey is the third highest run-getter for CSK in the IPL with 1,768 runs, only behind topper Suresh Raina (3,699) and M.S. Dhoni (2,987). “I have so many great memories as a player and have made many wonderful friends in Chennai. Now I am excited about giving back to the franchise by trying to help the next generation of CSK players,” said the 42-year-old, who won the Orange Cap for most runs in the 2013 season. “It is exciting to have CSK back in the competition and I am sure the fans are very happy to have their team back on the field,” he added.

“It’s really nice to have Hussey back with us in a coaching capacity since he has played for us and possesses a keen cricketing brain,” said Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited director K. George John. “I’m sure he’ll continue to be a huge asset to the franchise. Even when he was playing, he was of great help in mentoring the younger players,” John added. CSK recently retained M.S. Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja and has focussed on retaining as much of its core group as possible with Stephen Fleming all set to return as head coach. While he confirmed Super Kings had not named the rest of their coaching staff, he said the franchise wasn't looking beyond Stephen Fleming for the job of the head coach. Fleming has coached Super Kings to IPL championships in 2010 and 2011, and a Champions League title in 2010.

"We are in talks with him," John said. "He's busy with the Big Bash, so nothing has been signed yet. Most likely it will be him, but we haven't finished the deal yet. We are not in talks with anybody else. We are looking at the same coaching staff - Gregory [King] and Tommy [Simsek] as trainer and physio. We are also seriously looking at a bowling coach," he added.

Meanwhile another Australian, Ricky Ponting, the former Australian captain, has been named as the new head coach of Delhi Daredevils for the upcoming IPL 2018 season, the franchise confirmed. The legendary cricketer, who amassed more than 13000 runs in both Tests and ODIs, will take over the mantle of coaching the side from Paddy Upton, with whom the franchise parted ways last year following the conclusion of his two-year contract. Daredevils also lost the services of Rahul Dravid, who served as a mentor for the last two seasons. The former India captain had to step down from his position due to BCCI's conflict of interest clause on June 30 last year. Dravid opted to continue as the coach of India A and India Under-19 teams.

Ponting, who announced his retirement from international cricket in 2012, was sold to the franchise in 2013 for a base price of $400,000. He was subsequently named as the captain but opted to resign mid-way into the tournament as he could only notch up a mere 52 runs from six matches. Mumbai Indians then decided to retain Ponting in an advisory capacity for the following season.

He then coached Mumbai Indians to their second IPL title in 2015, but decided to not continue in that position after his two-year contract expired in 2016. He was also appointed as the assistant coach of Australia for the T20I series versus Sri Lanka last year.
